El Transito Surf Guide
The best swell direction is SW or SSW, 180 to 215 degrees is great. It's also good on W swells too and accepts some NW as long as its under 290 degrees. Best periods are anything 16 seconds or under. Over 16 seconds it tends to shut down as the main beach is a fairly small crescent shaped coast line. There are other breaks within walking distance that work great on the larger, longer period swells though. The best time of year is the off season though, November to March when it is rarely under waist high. Predominant offshore winds are best from the NE/E. The break is a beach break in the main beach. There is a small point on the south side of the beach (similar to Machete Point at Playa Maderas) with a rock/sand bottom that works on medium period S/SW swells. There are a couple other secret spots nearby known by the guys at Green Surf Nicaragua. The wave in the main beach (sand bottom) is typically mellow with mellower barrel sections and medium length waves. Its great for all levels of surfers. Its best from waist to 1 ft overhead on an incoming tide, however, breaks on most tides. The offshores never get too strong here (hardly ever upwelling) and the water typically stays warm year round. You may need a 1mm top from Jan to March.
